What is the Byzantine Iconography Video Tutorial Project?Having often been asked by people all over the world if I teach iconography workshops I realised that there is a need especially for people who don't have access to workshops, so in September 2017 I decided to undertake the mammoth project of producing affordable video tutorials that would start from the basics of drawing (something that is unfortunately completely ignored in most workshops to the detriment of contemporary iconography) and then progress to painting in traditional tetrachrome (a limited palette of 4 colours) with both the proplasmos and underpainting techniques. Once we've learned the basic "tools of the trade" we will progress to painting a variety of icons from simple to more advanced. This is not a standard weekend iconography workshop where you simply learn to trace an icon and "paint-by-numbers". It was never the tradition of the Church to make "photocopies" of old icons, but sadly this modern "tradition" is destroying the creative tradition of the Church. Every period of iconography from the Comnene to the Paleologian periods to the Cretan School has it's own style within the Byzantine system of painting and the iconographic tradition of the Church. In these tutorials you will be introduced to the Byzantine system of painting and given tools that will allow you create within the tradition of the Church. While video tutorials can't replace live classes, where available, they do have the advantage that the student can watch the technique over and over as many times as needed. I also undertook the immense time-consuming task of adding sub-titles to the tutorials so that they would be accessible to the deaf who would have difficulty following even in a live workshop. Once each series of tutorials is completed they are uploaded to Udemy. These videos require a great deal of time, effort and expense and like all artists I still need to pay my rent and bills. That is where Patreon comes in. If you enjoy and benefit from these video tutorials you now have the opportunity to support this work and keep it going by coming a Patron. This will help cover the costs of materials and equipment and will allow me to make more videos. Both my computer and my tablet are on the brink of death and if they die it will put the whole project in jeopardy and I simply can't afford to replace them. There are several reward levels with different benefits to suit Patron's needs and there are two categories of Patrons with different benefits: Students (for those who want to learn iconography) and Supporters (for those who simply want to support this project). The basic rewards for each level are: $1: Access to sketches $5: Early access to tutorials $10: Early access to tutorials plus a PDF with the tutorial sketches and other resources $25 Student: Previous benefits and a digital timelapse sketch video $25 Supporter: Early access to tutorials, PDF and monthly laminated icon print $50 Student: Early Access to tutorials, PDF, digital timelapse sketch video, Monthly assignment for correction and critique. $50 Supporter: Early access to tutorials, PDF and 15x20cm hand painted icon after 1 year of support. $100 Supporter: Early Access to tutorials, PDF and 22x28cm hand painted icon after 1 year of support. In addition to these benefits, depending on the amount of lifetime support, Patrons also get free coupons for the tutorials on Udemy. Since starting this project, by God's grace, I am now working on the 19th tutorial and there are currently four series available on Udemy. It is such a blessing to be able to see students progress as the work diligently on the assignments.
So please consider supporting this project on Patreon to keep it going and share this with anyone interested in learning Byzantine Iconography.

This is a sample preview of my second Patreon Tutorial that will be posted at the end of the month. here you will see how to draw the face in the dynamic frontal pose on curved axes.
I've decided to make a distinction in the rewards between Students and Supporters so that Patrons can choose the rewards that suit them best.I have added a $25 level for students who will have access to the time-lapse sketch videos that will become a regular feature and help to show the process of drawing.
I have also added a $50 level for Students who will be given a monthly drawing assignment that I will critique and correct. As it is impossible for me to answer everyone's questions about iconography, this tier will be limited to 5 places and the critique commentary will only concern the homework assignments. I may in future add a further exclusive level for advice and critique on Patron's personal work depending on the demand. Thank you for your support! The first of my Patreon Iconography Tutorials has been uploaded! This is a series of tutorials that begins from the basics of the line and will progress to painting in tetrachrome and underpainting techniques. The purpose of these tutorials is to make iconography lessons available to those who can't afford or don't have access to workshops. However, making these tutorials requires an enormous amount of time, materials, equipment and effort, and like all artists, I still need to pay the bills and rent. That is where Patreon comes in . It is a platform for supporting the work of artists and creatives whose work you enjoy. I'm using it as a means of supporting this Iconography Tutorial Project to make tutorials available for you. For as little as $5 per month you can have access to these tutorials and can watch these techniques as many times as you need to. This video is a preview of the first tutorial that is now available. Please support this project so that I can keep it going. Thank you. I have often been asked by people all over the world if I teach iconography workshops. To try and fulfill this need I started making iconography video tutorials on YouTube. These require a great deal of time, effort and expense and like all artists I still need to pay my rent and bills. That is where Patreon comes in. If you enjoy and benefit from these video tutorials you now have the opportunity to support this work and keep it going by coming a Patron. This will help cover the costs of materials and equipment and will allow me to make more videos. It will also allow me to do more creative work besides commissions.
Besides the video tutorials, my patrons will also have exclusive access to other projects including my New Ecclesiastical Year's resolution to , God willing, make a daily sketch of one of the Saints of the day. Any support is greatly appreciated and will benefit not only myself, but those who want to learn iconography. Thank you. Prints of this icon are available here.
